Supervisor Computer Operations

Supervises the activities of an organization's computer operations function. Ensures rapid, accurate, and efficient processing of corporation's computer-based workload. Supervises and coordinates activities of workers operating computers and peripheral equipment. Assigns staff and schedules work to facilitate production. Typically reports to manager level in organization and has shift supervisors or lead computer operators reporting to position.: Trains workers to operate computer and peripheral equipment. Confers with programmers and operates computer to test new and modified programs. Directs operation of computer to execute program, and observes operation to detect error or failure in progress of program. Reads monitor and enters commands to help computer operators identify and correct errors. Revises input data and program to continue operation of program. Notifies programming and maintenance personnel if unable to locate and correct cause of processing error or failure. Revises operation schedule to adjust for delays, or notifies scheduling workers of need to adjust schedule. Prepares or reviews production, operating, and down time records and reports. Recommends changes in programs, routines, and quality control standards to improve computer operating efficiency. Consults with manager about problems, such as equipment performance, output quality, and maintenance schedule. Coordinates flow of work between shifts to ensure continuity.

Computer Programmer

Writes, tests, and maintains computer programs that provide instructions computers must follow to perform their function. Conceives, designs, and tests logical structure for solving problems by computers. Writes programs according to specifications, which may be provided by Software Engineers, Systems Analysts, or other computer scientists. Updates, repairs, modifies, and expands existing computer programs. This position is distinguished from Programmer Analyst as this position may not include or involves a lesser degree of structured analysis, impact and compatibility analysis, cost analysis, computer capability analysis, feasibility studies, and user/customer interface. Typically requires a four-year college degree in field of specialty; however, some organizations may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Converts data from project specifications and statement of problem and procedures to create or modify computer programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems. Prepares, or receives from systems analyst or other computer scientist, flowcharts and diagrams to illustrate sequence of steps program must follow and to describe logical operations involved. Analyzes workflow chart and diagram, applying knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, and symbolic logic. Confers with supervisor and representatives of departments concerned with program to resolve questions of program intent, data input, output requirements, and inclusion of internal checks and controls. Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to develop programs that meet user requirements. Formulates plan outlining steps required to develop program, using structured analysis and design. Submits plans to user for approval. Designs computer terminal screen displays to accomplish goals of user request. Converts project specifications, using flowcharts and diagrams, into sequence of detailed instructions and logical steps; and codes language that can be processed by computer, applying knowledge of computer programming techniques and computer languages. Enters program codes into computer system. Inputs test data into computer. Observes computer monitor screen to interpret program operating codes. Reads computer printouts or observes display screen to detect syntax or logic errors during program test, or uses diagnostic software to detect errors. Corrects program errors using methods such as modifying program or altering sequence of program steps. Recreates steps taken by user to locate source of problem and rewrites program to correct errors. Analyzes, reviews, and rewrites programs to increase operating efficiency or to adapt program to new requirements. Compiles and writes documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. Writes instructions to guide operating personnel during production runs. Writes manual for users to describe installation and operating procedures. Assists users to solve operating problems. May work with Systems Analyst to obtain and analyze project specifications and flowcharts. May install and test program at user site. May monitor performance of program after implementation. May specialize in developing programs for business or technical applications. May train workers to use program. May assist Computer Operator to resolve problems in running computer program.

Computer Programmer Lead

Leads in the adherence to planning, policies, practices, and personnel while overseeing a computer programming project or group of programmers. Assigns, coordinates, and reviews work of programming personnel. Usually reports to a supervisor of programming. Position is distinguished from a supervisor as position does not have full responsibility for recruiting, hiring, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary actions. Typically requires a four-year college degree in field of specialty; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Plans, schedules, and directs preparation of programs to process data and solve problems by use of computers. Consults with managerial and systems analysis personnel to clarify program intent, identify problems, suggest changes, and determine extent of programming and coding required. Develops programs from workflow charts or diagrams, considering factors, such as computer storage capacity and speed, extent of peripheral equipment, and intended use of output data. Converts workflow charts to language that can be processed by computer. Enters program codes into computer. Enters test data into computer. Analyzes test runs on computer to correct or direct correction of coded program and input data. Revises or directs revision of existing programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. Compiles documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. Trains subordinates in programming and program coding. Prescribes standards for terms and symbols used to simplify interpretation of programs. Collaborates with computer manufacturers and other users to develop new programming methods. Prepares records and reports.

Computer Network Analyst

Analyzes and controls the technical architecture of Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks. Researches, tests, evaluates, and recommends telecommunications and data network systems. Analyzes workload, including traffic and utilization trends. Interfaces with users, consultants, technical teams, and vendors for maximum guidance in determining the most appropriate type of hardware installation. Supports complex PCs and LAN/WAN networks throughout the organization. Requires advanced knowledge and experience in the area of local and wide area networking, communications, and related hardware and software. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, or equivalent, and certification in networks.: Identifies areas of operation that need upgraded equipment, such as modems, fiber optic cables, and telephone wires. Conducts survey to determine user needs. Reads technical manuals and brochures to determine equipment that meets establishment requirements. Visits vendors to learn about available products or services. Tests and evaluates hardware and software to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing system, using equipment such as computer terminal and modem. Analyzes test data and recommends hardware or software for purchase. Develops and writes procedures for installation, use, and solving problems of communications hardware and software. Monitors system performance. Instructs users in use of equipment, and assists users to identify and solve data communication problems. May design and develop complex software interface programs. May write technical specifications to send to vendors for bid. May oversee or assist in installation of communications hardware. May perform minor equipment repairs.

Computer Information Scientist

Designs computer information systems to provide management or clients with specific data. Designs and develops methods and procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information for input and retrieval to and from computer. Utilizes knowledge of electronic data processing principles, system and computer capabilities, mathematics, symbolic language, and optical or pattern recognition principles. : Develops alternate designs to resolve problems in input, storage, and retrieval of information. May specialize in specific field of information science, such as scientific or engineering research, or in specific discipline, such as business, medicine, education, aerospace, or library science.

Computer Operations Manager

Evaluates proposed data processing projects to assess adequacy of existing hardware, and recommends purchase of equipment. Develops budget and monitors expenditures. May direct and coordinate activities of tape library.

Researches, designs, develops, and tests computer hardware such as computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, keyboards, modems, printers, and other related equipment. Works closely with software engineers and other scientists in design and testing of computer hardware, circuits, and related components. Requires a bachelor's degree in computer hardware engineering. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Researches, develops, designs, and tests computers and related electrical components, equipment, and systems, applying principles and techniques of electrical engineering. Works closely with software engineers and other scientists in design and testing of computer hardware, circuits, and related components. May supervise technicians, drafters, or lower level engineering personnel. May direct activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements. May direct and coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems in field installations. May use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

Computer Software Developer

Conducts analysis, designs products, and programs computer software that requires extensive research. Typical background for this position is advance study/knowledge in the field of computer science or software engineering along with advanced knowledge of software development and methodologies. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Performs software and system testing procedures, bug verification, release testing, and beta support. Performs product design and programming activities involving multiple modules or subsystems. Participates in design meetings and consults with other staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system. Performs complex release testing and beta support for assigned projects and resolves problems found in the software. Prepares documentation required of the product. Analyzes and researches software requirements to determine feasibility of design and marketing requirements within time and cost constraints. May consult with customer concerning application and maintenance of software. May coordinate installation of software system. May serve as a project architect.

Computer Security Specialist

Regulates access to computer data files, monitors data file use, and updates computer security files. Enters commands into computer to allow access to the computer system for users who forget their password. Reads computer security files to determine whether denial of data access reported by user is justified. Modifies security files to correct error, or explains that user authorization does not permit access. Organizations prefer up to two years of postsecondary training in field of specialty; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Answers user questions about computer security. Modifies security files to add new users, delete former users, and change user names. Sends printouts listing employee data authorization to computer user departments to verify or correct information in security files. Reviews data use records and compares usernames listed in records with employee authorization to ensure that all employees who accessed data files were entitled to do so.
