Software Design Director

Plans, schedules, and directs design of programs to process data and solve problems by use of computers. Consults with managerial and systems analysis personnel to clarify program intent, identify problems, suggest changes, and determine extent of programming and coding required. Trains subordinates in programming and program coding. Prescribes standards for terms and symbols used to simplify interpretation of programs. Collaborates with computer manufacturers and other users to develop new programming methods. Prepares records and reports.

Software Design Manager

Manages and coordinates software engineering function in the research, design, and development of computer software systems, in conjunction with hardware product development applying principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis. Assigns, coordinates, and reviews work of software engineering supervisors. The manager level is typically the second level of management; however, in smaller companies the manager may be a first level supervisor over subordinate staff.: Designs programs considering factors, such as computer storage capacity and speed, extent of peripheral equipment, and intended use of output data. Converts workflow charts to language that can be processed by computer. Reviews test runs on computer to assure correctly-coded programs and input data. Directs revision of existing programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. Compiles documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. Prescribes standards for terms and symbols used to simplify interpretation of programs. Collaborates with computer manufacturers and interfaces with other users to solicit ideas to develop new programming methods. Administers personnel functions including recruiting, review and approval of job descriptions and salary classifications, and selection and placement of personnel. May train subordinates in software design and program coding. Prepares records and reports for top management.

Software Developer Lead

Serves as a technical expert in the design, development, coding, testing, and debugging of new software or complex enhancements to existing software. Leads and coordinates a team of Software Developers on a particular project.: Works with technical staff to understand and develop resolution of software problems. Resolves customer complaints with software, and responds to suggestions for software modifications or enhancements. Assists in the training of less experienced software development staff. Instructs, directs, assigns tasks to, and monitors the performance of assigned Software Developers working on the project. Assists in the scheduling and coordinating of projects and participates in the design phase of the project. May participate in the development of software user manuals.

IT Web Developer

Controls website design and creation. Plans, designs, develops, tests, edits, maintains, and documents look and flow of websites. Interviews clients to help them clarify their goals for establishing a website. Designs or supervises design of digitized images, banners, bullets, charts, image maps and other graphics to enhance appearance of site. Applies knowledge of programming techniques and computer internet systems. Typically requires a four-year college degree in field of specialty; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Educates clients about the similarities and differences between Internet communication and other forms of marketing and public relations efforts. Custom tailors a plan for a proposed site using combination of graphic and written material, and modifies proposal as necessary until client is satisfied. Writes, or edits and formats, copy to present clients' message effectively. Develops video and audio enhancements if desired by client. Works with clients to select a domain name and registers the chosen name. Carries out functions of an Internet service provider (ISP) to reduce amount of technical expertise needed or trains personnel to operate and update site on an independent basis. Provides marketing and promotion services. Updates and expands information on website to attract repeat users. Meets on a regular basis to evaluate and modify site as it seems appropriate. Typical background requirements include knowledge in the field of computer science along with advanced knowledge of various web-enabling computer languages. Converts project specifications into sequence of detailed instructions and logical steps for coding into language that can be processed by computer, applying knowledge of computer programming techniques and computer languages. Applies knowledge of database design standards and database management. Enters program codes into computer system. Enters commands into computer to run and test programs. Determines if project requires creating a series of new programs or modifying existing programs that access data stored in databases. Observes display screen to detect syntax or logic errors during program test, or uses diagnostic software to detect errors. Replaces, deletes, or modifies codes to correct errors. Analyzes, reviews, and alters program to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. Writes documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections. Writes manual to describe installation and operating procedures. Assists in solving operating problems with site. Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to develop programs that meet client's site requirements.

Print Developer Automatic

Tends one or more machines that automatically develop, fix, wash, and dry photographic prints: threads leaders (paper strips) around rollers, through processing tanks and dryer, around polished drum, and onto takeup reel. Turns valves to fill tanks with premixed solutions, such as developer, dyes, stop-baths, fixers, bleaches, and washes. Moves thermostatic control to keep steam-heated drum at specified temperature. Splices sensitized paper to leaders, using tape. Starts machine and throws switches to synchronize drive speeds of processing and drying units. Compares processed prints with color standard and reports variations to control department. Adds specified amounts of chemicals to renew solutions. Maintains production records.

Computer Software Developer

Conducts analysis, designs products, and programs computer software that requires extensive research. Typical background for this position is advance study/knowledge in the field of computer science or software engineering along with advanced knowledge of software development and methodologies. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Performs software and system testing procedures, bug verification, release testing, and beta support. Performs product design and programming activities involving multiple modules or subsystems. Participates in design meetings and consults with other staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system. Performs complex release testing and beta support for assigned projects and resolves problems found in the software. Prepares documentation required of the product. Analyzes and researches software requirements to determine feasibility of design and marketing requirements within time and cost constraints. May consult with customer concerning application and maintenance of software. May coordinate installation of software system. May serve as a project architect.

Business Systems Software Analyst

Analyzes business processes, functions, and procedures to determine the most effective business systems software to meet the needs of the organization. Establishes systems specifications and objectives, based on business requirements and cost effectiveness, and provides recommendations to management personnel. Participates in systems development and design, including software programming and table, report, and panel design. Formulates test plans and coordinates and performs software testing. This job typically requires a four-year degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.: Coordinates implementation of the system software, including conversion of data to the new system, and works with application support personnel to resolve system problems. Documents system specifications and notes any changes in procedure. Acts as liaison between systems software development staff, management, and system end-users to determine requirements and obtain sign-off. Provides training and technical support to system end-users.

May coordinate installation of software system.
