Administers respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities, under supervision of physician. Completion of a four year, advanced-level respiratory therapy program and registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) are typically requirements for this position.: Sets up and operates devices, such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators to support respiration and maintain patient's oxygen supply. Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment, such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients. Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes. Performs chest physiotherapy on patient to remove mucus from their lungs and make it easier for them to breathe, and assists patient in performing breathing exercises. Assists in the performance of diagnostic testing by performing pulmonary function tests to be used by physician in diagnosis of case. Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy. Consults with physician in event of adverse reactions. Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, and orders repairs when needed. Provides patient education and support for patients suffering from chronic lung disease. Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel. May care for premature infants with underdeveloped pulmonary systems, the elderly who have increased susceptibility to pulmonary and cardiac disease, and trauma patients.

Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. Plans, directs, and monitors operations, functions, and resources of the Respiratory Therapy Department to assure optimal and safe patient care in the delivery of respiratory care services. Directs and evaluates diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree, registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and five years of experience in providing respiratory care.: Ensures compliance with regulatory and professional guidelines associated with the delivery of respiratory care services. Directs and monitors the allocation of staffing and technical support to assure compliance with safety standards and labor and productivity targets. Directs the development of educational programs and profession scope of practice. Hires, trains, evaluates, and motivates a qualified Respiratory Therapy staff. Determines fiscal requirements for the department and prepares expense and revenue budgets. Evaluates capital purchase requirements and justification. Analyzes operational reports to establish departmental progress and adverse trends. Develops professional standards and outcome measurements to assure sound clinical practice and adherence to regulatory agency standards. Serves as a liaison between medical staff and administration. Evaluates patient care plans. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet service levels. Prepares and monitors the departmental budget.

Assists personnel in the Respiratory Therapy Department. Assists in providing respiratory therapy as directed by Respiratory Therapist and prescribed by physician.: Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes equipment used in administration of respiratory therapy. Examines equipment to detect worn tubes, loose connections, or other indications of disrepair, and notifies supervisor of need for maintenance. Starts equipment and observes gauges measuring pressure, rate of flow, and continuity to test equipment, and notifies supervisor of malfunctions. Assists in preparation of inventory records. Delivers oxygen tanks and other equipment and supplies to specified hospital locations.

Manages and oversees activities of and provides direction to employees engaged in inhalant therapy involving the administration of aerosolized drugs and medical gases. Typically reports to director level and may have first level supervisors reporting to this position; however, in smaller organizations, the manager may be the first level supervisor over subordinate staff.: Directs and coordinates delivery program of a school or hospital in the treatment of patients. This position is not a Registered Respiratory Therapist.: Coordinates all emergency responses and develops clinical care protocols. Evaluates patient care plans and performs assessment of endotracheal tube placement. Provides orientation, education, and training as needed to Respiratory Services staff. Reviews performance of all staff members and develops performance plans and professional goals. Instructs and supervises patient and therapeutic assessments to assure optimal medical decisions. Monitors adherence to policy, procedures, and practice guidelines. Assists with departmental clinical research projects. Maintains appropriate supply inventory. Provides input into applicant hiring and termination decisions. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.
