Database Design Analyst

Analyzes business procedures and problems to refine data for database management. Analyzes, designs and implements accurate, secure, efficient, logical and physical data bases and coordinates database development applying knowledge of database design standards and database management system. Revises company definition of data as defined in data dictionary (information about data, including name, description, source of data item, and key words for categorizing and searching for data item descriptions). Determines and enters changes to data dictionary descriptions, including type, structure, and intended use of data within system, or assigns data entry work to programmer. Develops data model describing data elements and how they are used, following procedures and using pen and template or computer software. Creates description to enable programmer analysts to understand how programs should access data. Writes description of how user accesses data, referred to as logical database. Writes physical database description, such as location, space requirements, and access method, to protect company data resources against unauthorized access and accidental destruction, according to computer industry standards and knowledge of database management system. Conducts special studies and investigations pertaining to development of new information systems to meet current and projected needs. Plans and prepares technical reports, memoranda, and instructional manuals relative to the establishment and functioning of complete operational systems. Workers typically specialize in one or more types of database management systems. May specialize in adding, deleting, and modifying data items in data dictionary.

Database Report Writer

Develops, documents, and supports standardized and/or customized reports from a database. Collaborates with end-users to gather report requirements and ensure proper testing/validation.: Assesses the needs of clients and/or management in order to develop customized reports from a database. Generates reports in a database or other report writer programs and exports them into Crystal Reports, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and/or other applications. Ensures all information is appropriately encrypted. Distributes generated reports in a timely manner to clients, management, and other required entities as needed. Trains end-users in reporting database(s) and ad-hoc report creation. Provides end-user support on standardized and/or customized reports and ad-hoc report creation. Documents and maintains records of created reports and/or changes to existing reports.

Database Engineer

Installs, maintains, tunes, designs, diagnoses, and troubleshoots database performance problems and issues. Performs optimization for such online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) applications like SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel, Oracle, or others. Contributes to the system architecture, design, and development of the database layer.: Works with System Architects to improve the existing OLTP model, transaction cost reduction, and increase the overall data throughput. Tunes queries and database performance for applications within the development environment. Participates in design and code reviews, documentation of design, and implementation of methodologies to ensure high quality software. Installs, manages, and optimizes a combination of databases for the engineering team. Assists in the data modeling process for engineering. Performs database system profiling activities based on poorly performing use cases. Reviews and tunes initialization parameters, memory structures, and physical data layout for optimal performance. Collaborates with product specialists and team lead to create accurate level of effort estimates and schedules. Creates and maintains tools that simplify database support tasks. Designs, codes, and tests new features and functionality based on requirements provided. Perform2 software maintenance and bug fixes as needed.

Database Architect

Designs, develops, and implements infrastructure to provide highly-complex, reliable, and scalable database to meet the organization's objectives and requirements. Analyzes organization's business requirements for database design, and implements changes to database as required. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field and three years of database experience; however, some organizations will accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Performs systems analysis on database, and resolves performance, capacity, and replication issues as necessary. Provides detailed design and specification documentation, including flowcharts, for all aspects of the database. Develops, in conjunction with database analysts, methodologies, report views, queries, and table replications, and ensures that all the data is in the proper format. Participates in the identification, prioritization, and development of technical initiatives and strategies. Develops and maintains database standards and naming conventions. Keeps up-to-date on emerging database architectures, technologies, and methodologies, and attends training classes as necessary. Possesses extensive knowledge of one or more database systems, and is capable of working in all phases of database design and management.
