Top Support/Ancillary Executive Medical

Directs activities of multiple supporting units of a hospital. Organizational units may include but are not limited to three or more of the following supporting areas: central supply, engineering, dietary, housekeeping, laundry, security, pharmacy, respiratory, physical, recreational, occupational therapy, medical records, etc. Typically reports directly to the Hospital Administrator.: Coordinates activities with those of other hospital departments. Establishes policies and procedures in cooperation with other hospital officials. Interprets and administers personnel policies and provides for training program. Reviews activities and recommends changes in, or better utilization of, facilities, services, and staff. Establishes and maintains work schedules and assignments of staff members. Magnetic Imaging Technologist

Operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce cross-sectional images of patient's body for diagnostic purposes. Interviews patient to explain magnetic resonance imaging procedures and to request removal of metal objects that are hazardous to patient and equipment when magnet is activated. Typically requires specialized certification.: Positions patient on examining table and places specified coil (receiver) such as head coil or knee coil, close to area of interest, following protocols requested by Radiologist. Demonstrates use of microphone that allows patient and technologist to communicate during examination. Enters data, such as patient history, anatomical area to be scanned, orientation specified, and position of entry into aperture of magnetic resonance imaging equipment (head or feet first), into computer. Keys commands to specify scan sequences and adjust transmitters and receivers into computer. Observes patient through window of control room and on closed circuit TV screen to monitor patient safety and comfort. Views images of areas being scanned on video display screen to ensure quality of pictures. Keys in data on keyboard of camera to photograph images. Alerts staff entering magnet room to the danger of wearing or carrying metal around magnet.

Medical Technologist

Performs various routine or special chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components. Typically requires specialized certification.: Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology, using microscopic technique. Performs blood group, type, and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes. Adds reagents or indicator solutions, and subjects specimens for processing to operations such as heating, filtering, or titrating. Prepares slides as necessary for microscopic analysis. Observes reactions, analyzes test results, and enters findings in computer. Engages in medical research under direction of Chief Medical Technologist. May train and supervise students. May specialize in areas such as hematology, blood-bank, serology, chemistry, immunohematology, bacteriology, or histology.

Cardiopulmonary Technologist

Performs diagnostic tests of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems of patients to aid physician in diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, and blood vessel disorders. Prepares patient for tests and explains procedures to obtain cooperation and reassure patient. Conducts electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram, echocardiogram, stress testing, and other tests to aid in diagnosis of cardiovascular system, using variety of specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments. A degree in health sciences is required for this position.: Conducts tests of pulmonary system to aid physician in diagnosis of pulmonary disorders, using spirometer and other respiratory testing equipment. Operates multichannel physiologic monitor, as part of cardiac catheterization team, to measure and record functions of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems of patient during cardiac catheterization. Alerts physician to instrument readings outside normal ranges during cardiac catheterization procedures. Provides test results to physician.

Ultrasound Technologist

Performs diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing appropriate ultrasonic equipment to produce high frequency sound waves which create diagnostic images of the human body for use in diagnosis of disease or organ malfunctions. Selects equipment for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications of examination. Specialized certification and completion of an approved course in medical sonography is typically required.: Explains process to patient, and instructs and assists patient in assuming physical position for the test. Selects transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to the nature of the test, depth of field, and other specifications of test. Enters test data and patient information into computer to become part of the test record. Conducts test procedure, moving transducer, by hand, over specified area of body and observing sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced. Records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computer disk, strip printout, or film, and produces a permanent record of test result. Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician. Checks all equipment on a regular basis to ensure proper operation.

Radiology Technologist

Operates radiologic equipment to produce radiographs (x-rays) of body for diagnostic purposes, as directed by Radiologist. Typically requires specialized certification.: Positions patient on examining table and adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified area of body requested by physician. Explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation. Moves x-ray equipment into specified position and adjusts equipment controls to set exposure factors, such as time and distance, based on knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols. Practices radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding skills, and knowledge of applicable exposure factors, to minimize radiation to patient and staff. May operate mobile x-ray equipment in operating room, emergency room, or at patient's bedside. May specialize in production of screening and diagnostic x-rays for detection of breast tumors.

CAT Scan Technologist

Operates computed tomography (CT) scanner to produce cross-sectional radiographs of patient's body for diagnostic purposes. Talks with patient to get history, explain routine procedures, and address concerns. Typically requires specialized certification.: Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table, using supportive devices to obtain precise patient position and following protocols specified by Radiologist. Administers contrast media verbally or assists physician in intravenous administration. Enters data, such as type of scan requested, slice thickness, scan time, and other technical data into computer, using knowledge of radiologic technology and computed tomography. Produces computerized tomographic scanner radiographs of designated anatomical areas. Performs ultrasound examinations, retroperitoneal scans, obstetric and gynecological scans, abdominal scans, and radiation therapy localization for treatment planning and minor surgical procedures. Talks to patient to monitor patient safety and comfort. Views images of organs or tissue on video display screen to ensure quality of pictures. Evaluates radiographs, video tape, and computer-generated information for technical quality.

Medical Technologist Chief

Directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in performing chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Consults and serves as a resource to physicians. Assigns workers to duties and oversees performance of tests in the fields of microbiology, chemistry, histology, hematology, immunohematology, and serology. : Purchases or directs purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies. Reviews test results to ensure quality control. Coordinates and conducts education and training programs for medical technology students and personnel.

Cardiac Catheterization Technologist

Performs various tests of multiple blood samples obtained through catheterization or other means from specific areas within the patient's heart or lungs. A degree in health sciences is required for this position.: Determines the concentration of gases through catheterization process or other means. Monitors and records blood pressure and electrocardiogram (EKG) data. Studies the effects of cardiovascular drugs and diseases. Prepares required written documentation such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and related reports.

Blood Bank Technologist

Conducts both routine and specialized blood tests and collects blood donations in hospital or in blood or transfusion centers. Collects blood donations by selecting donors, typing blood, and performing viral marker testing to ensure the safety of the patient. Supervises all aspects of blood collection, storage, and delivery. Typically requires a bachelor's degree and certification in medical technology.: Performs screening tests for blood group antigens, compatibility, and antibody identification. Supervises all aspects of blood collection, storage, and delivery. Investigates abnormalities such as hemolytic diseases of newborns and hemolytic anemias by performing specialized tests. Supports transfusion therapy and assists in the development of transfusion policy. Investigates adverse reactions to transfusions by performing specialized tests to identify pathogens and antigens. Separates blood into components for specialized use and provides information to other medical staff members on the use of specialized blood delivery equipment and products. May support Physicians in transfusion therapy for patients with diseases affecting blood clotting or candidates for organ and cellular transplantation or therapy.
