Reviews project feasibility studies. Maintains a professional, technical, and clerical staff capable of meeting current and future needs. Establishes work standards. Interprets policies, purposes, and goals of organization to subordinates. Prepares progress reports to inform management of project status and deviation from goals. Contracts with management specialists, technical personnel, or vendors to solve problems. Reviews reports of computer and peripheral equipment production, malfunctions, and maintenance to ascertain costs and plan department operating changes. Analyzes department workflow and workers' job duties to recommend reorganization or departmental realignment within company. Participates in decisions concerning staffing and promotions within data processing department. Directs training of subordinates. Keeps current on new developments in information technology, and plans for future upgrades and organizational changes. May prepare proposals and solicit sale of systems analysis, programming, and computer services to outside firms. May assist staff to diagnose and solve computer equipment problems. May participate in technical projects, such as writing equipment specifications or developing computer programs for specified applications.

Participates in modeling system functionality and usability to support workflow. Determines required resources and measures quality of laboratory systems reports. Maintains laboratory systems documentation and develops related policies and procedures. Regularly updates system, operational, and department documentation. Recommends areas for process improvement. Prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and/or conclusions on subjects relating to laboratory system management.

Health Information Management Supervisor

Assists in the planning of administrative and technical policies of the Health Information Management department and supervises employees who analyze, compile, code, index, and store permanent medical records of patients. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in health information management and certification as a Registered Records Administrator (RRA). : Reviews medical records for completeness and accuracy, and assigns diagnostic and procedure codes. Provides medical records training and monitors employee work to ensure proper maintenance and release of medical records. Handles complex inquiries that cannot be handled by medical records employees. Organizes and distributes the department workload. May order supplies and maintain supply inventory. May coordinate and supervise temporary workers used within the department.

Manages the Health Information Management department which is responsible for analyzing, compiling, coding, indexing and storing permanent medical records of patients. Reviews medical records for completeness and accuracy, and assigns diagnostic and procedure codes. This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management and certification as a Registered Records Administrator (RRA) or RHIA.: Manages the Health Information Management department which is responsible for analyzing, compiling, coding, indexing and storing permanent medical records of patients. Coordinates a staff of information gatherers and teaches information management. Plans and conducts meetings with staff to ensure compliance with established departmental practices and to implement all new policies, changes and standards. Implements changes to effect continual improvement in services provided and assures compliance with regulatory and legal requirements. Recruits, selects, trains and motivates departmental personnel. Reviews medical records for completeness and accuracy, and assigns diagnostic and procedure codes. This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management and certification as a Registered Records Administrator (RRA) or RHIA. Provides medical records training and monitors employee work to ensure proper maintenance and release of medical records. Handles complex inquiries that cannot be handled by medical records employees.

Registered Health Information Technician

Reviews the medical record documentation to assure specificity of diagnoses, procedures, and appropriate/optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges and accurately codes and sequences the primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD-9 and CPT coding conventions. Typically requires a college degree in medical health records and CCS certification by the American Health Information Management Association or a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).: Coordinates and reviews the work of designated employees to ensure quality and quantity of work performed through regular audits. Assists with research and development and presentation of continuing education programs on areas of specialization. Abstracts and compiles data from medical records for optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges. Consults with and educates physicians on coding practices and conventions. Maintains reporting documentation for certain procedures in compliance with regulation. Performs medical record audits. Compiles medical care and census data for statistical reports on types of diseases treated, surgery performed, and use of hospital beds, in response to inquiries from law firms, insurance companies, and government agencies. Conducts special studies and research.
