Packaging Director

Directs, plans, regulates, and controls activities related to production of packaging products and materials for storage or shipment. Reviews analyses of activities, costs, and operations to determine department progress toward organization goals and objectives. Assists top management in planning, developing, and administering policies, procedures, and objectives of the packaging functions in accordance with the organization's objectives. Typically reports to a top executive and manager level personnel report to this position.: Coordinates efforts with consultants, providers, and suppliers. Establishes, analyzes, and coordinates department budget estimates and controls expenditures to administer approved budget. Implements approved recommendations of procedures or organizational changes. May recruit, hire, and train department staff, evaluate staff performance, and develop goals and objectives for staff.

Director Packaging

Packaging Manager

Manages and oversees packaging activities of department engaged in meeting specific marketing, production, shipping, and cost requirements. Reviews production orders to ascertain type and quantity of product, containers to be used, and other packaging requirements. Determines appropriate materials and containers to be used for packaging. Decides specific equipment or machinery to use for operation of specific packaging. Oversees inspection of products prior to packaging and return of rejected products to production departments. Observes packaging operations and inspects containers to verify conformance to specifications. Typically reports to a director and may have supervisors reporting to this position; however, in smaller companies the manager may be the first level supervisor over subordinate staff.: Works with maintenance department to ensure efficient operation of packaging machinery. Approves requisition of containers and other supplies for delivery to workstations. Monitors production schedules. Determines priority and sequence of operations. Inspects work in progress and completed to ensure conformance to specifications. Keeps and monitors records of work in process. Evaluates and assists in the development and implementation of organization policies, practices, procedures, and attainment of operating goals. Ensures adequate training of staff and employee compliance to organization's policies and practices. Organizes resources to ensure effective production of goods. May initiate or authorize employee hire, promotion, discharge, or transfer. Performs related work as required.

Packaging Supervisor

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in packaging products and materials for storage or shipment. Studies production order to ascertain type and quantity of product, containers to be used, and other packaging requirements. Prepares work schedules, and gives work assignments to employees. Inspects products prior to packaging and returns rejected products to production departments. Observes packaging operations and inspects containers to verify conformance to specifications. Oversees the activities involving machines that label, weigh, and seal containers. This position typically reports to a manager and is the first level of supervision in the organization.: Starts, adjusts, and repairs packaging machinery, or notifies maintenance department. Trains workers in operation of equipment. Requisitions containers and other supplies for delivery to workstations. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules, using knowledge of machines and equipment. Determines priority and sequence of operations. Inspects work in progress and completed to ensure conformance to specifications. Keeps records of work in process and completed along with employee time and materials. Interprets company policy to employees and enforces company policy and practices. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists employees in solving work problems. May recruit, hire, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action. Performs related work as required.

Thermal Cutter Helper

Performs any combination of following duties to assist workers in welding, brazing, and thermal and arc cutting activities: moves workpieces, tools, and supplies, manually or by handtruck. Lifts, moves and holds, or clamps workpieces to table, into jigs, or into position as directed, manually or by using hoist, pry bars, wrenches, hammer, and wedges. Cleans workpieces to remove impurities, such as slag, rust, and grease, using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper, or chemical solutions. Connects hoses from hand torch to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or connects cables from power source to electrode holder and workpiece or fixture. Starts gasoline engine to activate electric generators. Places workpieces into furnace to preheat for specified time. Removes, tags or marks, and moves finished work. May attach grappling equipment to objects preparatory to movement by crane. May be designated according to type of activity as thermal-cutter helper (welding).

Packaging/Filling Operator

Tends machine that performs one or more packaging functions, such as filling, marking, labeling, tying, packing, or wrapping containers.: Starts machine and observes operation to detect malfunctions of machine. Stops machine and reports malfunction to supervisor. Makes minor adjustments or repairs, such as opening valves, changing forming and cutting dies, setting guides, or clearing away damaged products of containers. Inspects filled container to ensure that product is packaged according to specifications.

Packaging/Filling Setup

Prepares packaging equipment: adjusts settings. Repairs minor problems. Addresses needs of operator. May operate the equipment.

Carton Packaging Machine Operator

Tends machine that packs and seals packaged tobacco products into cartons: examines packaged products on conveyor to detect defects, such as defective folds or seams in wrappers or tear tape, offcentered stamps, or dents in cans. Removes defective packages and notifies cigarette-packing-machine operator or tobacco-packing-machine operator. Observes flow of cartons into machine and removes defective cartons. Notifies machine adjuster of machine malfunction. May form and place cartons on machine. May turn setscrews to set carton-holding guides to accommodate cartons of various sizes. May be known according to product packaged as cigarette-boxing-machine operator. Workers who package product by hand are classified under packer.
