May train other workers engaged in cataloguing, locating, filing, or copying selected material. May be designated according to subject matter, specialty, or library.

Library Consultant

Advises administrators of public libraries. Analyzes administrative policies, observes work procedures, and reviews data relative to book collections to determine effectiveness of library service to public. A master's degree in library science is typically required for carrying out the responsibilities for this job.: Compares allocations for building funds, salaries, and book collections with statewide and national standards, to determine effectiveness of fiscal operations. Gathers statistical data, such as population and community growth rates, and analyzes building plans to determine adequacy of programs for expansion. Prepares evaluation of library systems based on observations and surveys, and recommends measures to improve organization and administration of systems.

Library Technical Assistant

Provides information service, such as answering questions regarding available references, and assists public in use of available references and bibliographic tools, such as Library of Congress catalog. Performs routine cataloging and coding of library materials, organizes and maintains periodicals, prepares volumes for binding, handles interlibrary loan requests, prepares invoices, retrieves information from databases, and supervises support staff. Works under supervision of Librarian.: Answers routine inquiries and refers people requiring professional assistance to Librarian. Verifies bibliographic information on order requests. Calculates circulation statistics. Directs activities of workers in maintenance of stacks or in section of department or division, such as ordering or receiving section of acquisitions department, preparation activities in catalog department, or limited loan or reserve desk operation of circulation department. May operate and maintain audiovisual equipment.

Reviews records of overdue item and issues overdue notices to borrowers.: Sorts books, publications, and other items according to classification code and returns them to shelves, files, or other designated storage area. Locates books and publications for patrons. Issues borrower's identification card according to established procedures. Maintains files. Repairs books and places plastic covers on new books. Answers inquiries of paraprofessional nature on telephone and in person and refers people requiring professional assistance to Librarian. May prepare material cards or issue cards and duty schedules.

Braille Library Clerk

Assists patrons who have vision problems. Reviews borrowers list of desired reading material. Locates those materials or closely-related substitutes from library collection of braille volumes, large type volumes, CD's, tape cassettes, and open reel talking books. Completes paper work and gives or mails to borrower.: Compares borrower's written request with list or chart of available titles. Selects books or materials, such as large type or Braille volumes, tape cassettes, and open reel tape talking books, following borrower's request, or selects substitute titles, following such criteria as age, education, interest, and sex of borrower. Obtains books or materials from shelves. Types address label to prepare books or materials for mailing. May type records, such as material or issue cards. May receive and inspect talking books returned to library.

School Library Media Specialist

Assesses and meets needs of students and faculty for information, and develops programs to stimulate students' interests in reading and use of types of resources. Selects and organizes books, films, tapes, records, and other materials and equipment. Suggests appropriate books to students for classroom assignments and personal readings. : Plans and carries out program of instruction in use by school library media center. Prepares and administers budget for media center. Confers with faculty to provide materials for classroom instruction. Confers with parents, faculty, public librarians, and community organizations to develop programs to enrich students' communications skills. Reviews records to compile lists of overdue materials and notifies borrowers to arrange for their return.
