Laboratory Technologist Chemical

Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials for purposes, such as research and development of new products or processes, quality control, maintenance of environmental standards, and other work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences.

Laboratory Services Director

Provides direction and leadership for clinical laboratory areas on a 24 hour basis to ensure effective technical and administrative management of clinical functions. Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper functioning of laboratory equipment, and compliance with federal regulations. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in medical technology, experience as a Medical Technologist in a clinical laboratory setting, and five years of clinical laboratory management experience. Certification is also typically required.: Directs and coordinates technical and administrative functions for assigned laboratories. Maintains responsibility for the financial performance for areas of responsibility and ensures clinical quality in all aspects of laboratory operation. Ensures that all regulatory and licensure requirements and accreditation are current and fully enforced. Prepares management and technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized, and test results. Hires, develops, and motivates a qualified medical laboratory management staff. Provides appropriate resources of equipment and staffing to maintain optimal laboratory efficiency. Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, and interpretation/verification of specimen quality and test results. Prepares, manages, and monitors the departmental budget. Oversees the purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Supervisor University Laboratory

Coordinates activities of university science laboratory to assist faculty in teaching and research programs. Consults with faculty laboratory coordinator to determine equipment purchase priorities based on budget allowances, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities. : Prepares and puts in place equipment scheduled for use during laboratory teaching sessions. Demonstrates care and use of equipment to teaching assistants. Builds prototype equipment, applying electromechanical knowledge and using hand tools and power tools. Trains teaching staff and students in application and use of new equipment. Diagnoses equipment malfunctions and dismantles and repairs equipment, applying knowledge of shop mechanics and using gauges, meters, hand tools, and power tools. Develops methods of laboratory experimentation, applying knowledge of scientific theory and computer capability. Confers with teaching staff periodically to evaluate new equipment and methods. Teaches laboratory sessions in absence of teaching assistant.

Laboratory Supervisor

Supervises and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in performing laboratory tests of a chemical and physical nature. Directs and advises personnel in special test procedures to analyze components and physical properties of materials. Recommends measures to improve methods, performance, and quality of product or service, and suggests changes in working conditions to increase efficiency. Usual requirement is a four-year college degree in field of specialty.: Compiles and analyzes test information to determine operating efficiency of process or equipment and to diagnose malfunctions. Confers with scientists or engineers to conduct analyses, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests. Interprets company policy to employees and enforces company policy and practices. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists employees in solving work problems. May adjust formulas and processes based on test results. May test and analyze sample products. May prepare test solutions, compounds, and reagents for use by laboratory personnel in conducting tests. May conduct research to develop custom products and investigate complaints on existing products. May recruit, hire, train staff, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action.

University Laboratory Supervisor

Microbiology Technologist

Cultivates, isolates, and assists in identifying bacteria and other microbial organisms, and performs various bacteriological, mycological, virological, mycobacteriological, and parasitological tests. Receives human or animal body materials from autopsy or diagnostic cases, or collects specimens directly from patients, under supervision of Laboratory Head. A degree in health sciences is required for this position.: Examines materials for evidence of microbial organisms. Makes parasitological tests of specimens. May instruct medical laboratory students and other medical personnel in laboratory procedures. May supervise other technologists.

Science Technologist

Performs chemical, microscopic, serologic, hematologic, immunohematologic, parasitic, and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. This is a professional level position and excludes paraprofessionals.: Receives specimens for laboratory, or obtains such body materials as urine, blood, pus, and tissue directly from patient, and makes quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses. Cultivates, isolates, and identifies pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and other micro-organisms. Cuts, stains, and mounts tissue sections for study by Pathologist. Performs blood tests for transfusions, studies morphology of blood. Groups or types blood and cross matches that of donor and recipient to ascertain compatibility. Engages in medical research to further control and cure disease.

Radiation Therapy Technologist

Provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by Radiologist according to established practices and standards. Reviews prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and identification. Acts as liaison with physicist and supportive care personnel. Typically requires specialized certification.: Prepares equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, and protection devices, and positions patient according to prescription. Enters data into computer and sets controls to operate and adjust equipment and regulate dosage. Observes and reassures patient during treatment and reports unusual reactions to physician. Photographs treated area of patient and processes film. Maintains records, reports, and files as required. Follows principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others. May assist in dosimetry procedures and tumor localization. May train therapy students.

Medical Technologist

Performs various routine or special chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components. Typically requires specialized certification.: Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology, using microscopic technique. Performs blood group, type, and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes. Adds reagents or indicator solutions, and subjects specimens for processing to operations such as heating, filtering, or titrating. Prepares slides as necessary for microscopic analysis. Observes reactions, analyzes test results, and enters findings in computer. Engages in medical research under direction of Chief Medical Technologist. May train and supervise students. May specialize in areas such as hematology, blood-bank, serology, chemistry, immunohematology, bacteriology, or histology.

Cardiopulmonary Technologist

Performs diagnostic tests of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems of patients to aid physician in diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, and blood vessel disorders. Prepares patient for tests and explains procedures to obtain cooperation and reassure patient. Conducts electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram, echocardiogram, stress testing, and other tests to aid in diagnosis of cardiovascular system, using variety of specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments. A degree in health sciences is required for this position.: Conducts tests of pulmonary system to aid physician in diagnosis of pulmonary disorders, using spirometer and other respiratory testing equipment. Operates multichannel physiologic monitor, as part of cardiac catheterization team, to measure and record functions of cardiovascular and pulmonary systems of patient during cardiac catheterization. Alerts physician to instrument readings outside normal ranges during cardiac catheterization procedures. Provides test results to physician.
