Diagnostic Laboratory Technician

Supports diagnostic investigations by performing literature research, preparing protocols, establishing new procedures, participating in studies, and preparing progress reports. Performs mycoplasma isolation and identification for all animal species. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, or microbiology and one year of microbiological or immunological laboratory work experience.: Prepares the media and reagents related to mycoplasma isolation, identification and sensitivity tests. Maintains records of the bacteria repository system. Dispenses and stores conjugate. Maintains quality control organisms and mycoplasma cultures. Maintains freezer inventory. Laboratory Technician (Mentor)

Performs routine and complex tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.: In a senior capacity, conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, under the supervision of Medical Technologist. Trains and guides less experienced Medical Laboratory Technicians. Prepares sterile media and plates, jars or test tubes for use in growing bacterial cultures. Prepares solutions, reagents and stains, following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Maintains detailed records of tests performed and reports laboratory test results to appropriate personnel. Calibrates and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning. Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments. Collects blood specimens from patients using venipuncture or stick. Performs blood counts, using microscope. Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes. May draw blood from patient's finger, foot, ear lobe, or vein, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples. May specialize in hematology, blood bank, cytology, histology, or chemistry.

Laboratory Technician Medical

Performs routine tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, under supervision of Medical Technologist. Typically requires specialized certification.: Performs blood counts, using microscope. Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes. May draw blood from patient's finger, ear lobe, or vein, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples. May specialize in hematology, blood bank, cytology, histology, or chemistry.

Animal Technician Laboratory

Performs animal husbandry duties by caring for and monitoring animals used for research. Prepares food, water, and environment enrichment for laboratory animals. Monitors and records the health status and behavior of animals. Typically requires some experience in veterinary medical or animal husbandry. AALAS certification may be required in some organizations.: Observes animals' reactions to tests, makes routine calculations and prepares graphs. Sets up laboratory or surgery room and assists with injections, surgery preparation and surgery. Provides post-surgical care of animals. Instructs others on the proper use of equipment and prepares general graphics for teaching slides. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains cages, racks, facilities and other equipment. Disposes of animal carcasses, used bedding, sharp containers, and other related materials. Maintains health and USDA records, surgery logs, and drug logs. Ensures that work performed meets the requirements of applicable safety standards.

Laboratory Technician Artificial Breeding

Measures purity and potency of animal semen to develop improved methods of processing and preserving for artificial insemination: observes sample of freshly collected semen under microscope to determine mobility of sperm cells. Measures density, using densiometer. Adds measured amounts of extender, sodium citrate, and antibiotics to dilute and preserve sample. Transfers to refrigeration unit. Records data for use in compiling history of sire. Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment. Performs experimental tests, as directed, for purposes such as extension of cell survival rate and development of improved preservation processes. Cultivates, isolates, and identifies pathogenic bacteria and other micro-organisms in semen.

Data Acquisition Laboratory Technician

Sets up, operates, monitors, modifies, calibrates, and maintains computer systems and devices for acquisition and analysis of data, utilizing knowledge of electronic theory and operation of computer systems. Reviews engineering notification of test to determine data required for post-test analysis.: Plans method and sequence of operations to acquire data, and sets up required electronic data acquisition, test, and measurement equipment and accessories. Inputs test data and program information into computer console for specific test requested. Enters commands to modify program to accommodate additional or revised test requirements. Calculates calibration values used as model for comparison and measurement of test data. Monitors lights, displays, and other operating features of computer equipment, such as consoles, receivers, and printers, to detect malfunctions and ensure integrity of processed data. Diagnoses cause of equipment malfunctioning, and adjusts, repairs, or replaces faulty components. Enters information to update test database and to maintain records, such as electronic parts inventory and manuals for equipment maintenance and calibrations. Discusses test requirements and results with engineers and other personnel.

Electrical Laboratory Technician

Designs, develops, tests, and modifies related electric components, equipment, products, and services, applying electrical theory and related knowledge. Work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of scientists and engineers. Uses principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems.: Assembles and tests experimental devices, switch panels, transformers, generator windings, solenoids, and other electrical equipment and components according to engineering data and knowledge of electrical principles. Modifies electrical prototypes to correct functional deviations under direction of Electrical Engineer. Diagnoses cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of operational equipment, and performs preventative and corrective maintenance. Develops wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications for system or equipment modifications or expansion, and directs personnel performing routine installation and maintenance duties. Plans, directs, and records periodic electrical testing, and recommends or initiates modification or replacement of equipment that fails to meet acceptable operating standards. May work in product evaluation and testing, using measuring and diagnostic devices to adjust, test, and repair equipment.
