IT Manager

Manages and coordinates computer operations activity to ensure rapid, accurate, and efficient data processing of organization's workload. Plans and develops policies and procedures for carrying out computer operations. Builds systems capability that reflects the highest state of technical sophistication consistent with the corporation's needs and budget. Ensures security of company's database. Typically reports to a director and may have supervisors reporting to this position.: Meets with subordinates to discuss progress of work, resolve problems, and ensure that standards for quality and quantity of work are met. Creates staff capable of meeting current and future needs, and adjusts hours of work, priorities, and staff assignments to ensure efficient operation, based on workload. Reviews daily logs and reports to detect recurring slowdowns or errors. Consults with software and hardware vendors to solve computer processing problems. Meets with users to determine quality of service and identify needs. Ensures organization makes maximum use of the general system by providing for the education and training of the principal users. Meets with data processing managers to determine impact of proposed changes in hardware or software on computer operations and service to users. Evaluates new software and hardware to determine usefulness and compatibility with existing software and hardware. Evaluates proposed data processing projects to assess adequacy of existing hardware, and recommends purchase of equipment. Develops budget and monitors expenditures. May direct and coordinate activities of tape library.

IT Auditor

Plans and conducts audits of data processing systems and applications to safeguard assets, ensure accuracy of data, and promote operational efficiency. Establishes audit objectives and devises audit plan, following general audit plan and previous audit reports. Interviews workers and examines records to gather data, following audit plan. Analyzes data gathered to evaluate effectiveness of controls and determine accuracy of reports and efficiency and security of operations. : Writes audit report to document findings and recommendations. Devises, writes, and tests computer program required to obtain information needed from computer for audit. Devises controls for new or modified computer application to prevent inaccurate calculations and data loss, and to ensure discovery of errors.

IT Analyst

Oversees the operation of computer hardware systems, ensuring usage as efficiently as possible. Computer hardware systems include, but are not limited to, mainframes, minicomputers, and networks of personal computers. Anticipates problems and takes preventative action that may occur during operations. Operates computer hardware systems to process business, scientific, engineering, or other data, according to operating instructions. : Controls the console and sets controls required to run particular jobs. Loads peripheral equipment with selected materials, such as tapes and printer paper for operating runs, or oversees loading of peripheral equipment by peripheral equipment operators. Enters commands to clear computer system and start operation. Observes peripheral equipment and error messages displayed on monitor of terminal to detect faulty output or machine stoppage. Enters commands to correct error or stoppage and resume operations. Notifies supervisor of errors or equipment stoppage. Clears equipment at end of operating run and reviews schedule to determine next assignment. Records problems that occurred, such as down time, and actions taken. May answer telephone calls to assist computer users encountering problem. May assist workers in classifying, cataloging, and maintaining tapes.

IT Director

Plans, schedules, and directs the development, production, and administrative processing of the organization's computer operations. Assigns and schedules work, or delegates work to subordinate managers and supervisors, and reviews work. Ensures rapid, accurate, and efficient processing of corporation's workload by use of a computer-based system. Builds systems capability that reflects the highest state of technical sophistication consistent with the corporation's needs and budget. Ensures security of company's database. Recommends insights that contribute to overall company strategic management. Ensures corporation makes maximum use of the general system by providing for the education and training of the principal users. This position typically reports to the Top Information Technology Officer and normally has managers reporting to it.: Consults with management to determine information requirements of management, scientists, or engineers, determine boundaries and priorities of new projects, and discuss system capacity and equipment acquisitions. Confers with department heads involved with proposed projects to ensure cooperation and further define nature of project. Confers with computer analysts or engineers to define equipment needs. Reviews project feasibility studies. Maintains a professional, technical, and clerical staff capable of meeting current and future needs. Establishes work standards. Interprets policies, purposes, and goals of organization to subordinates. Prepares progress reports to inform management of project status and deviation from goals. Contracts with management specialists, technical personnel, or vendors to solve problems. Reviews reports of computer and peripheral equipment production, malfunctions, and maintenance to ascertain costs and plan department operating changes. Analyzes department workflow and workers' job duties to recommend reorganization or departmental realignment within company. Participates in decisions concerning staffing and promotions within data processing department. Directs training of subordinates. Keeps current on new developments in information technology, and plans for future upgrades and organizational changes. May prepare proposals and solicit sale of systems analysis, programming, and computer services to outside firms. May assist staff to diagnose and solve computer equipment problems. May participate in technical projects, such as writing equipment specifications or developing computer programs for specified applications.

IT Recruiter

Performs resource and recruitment functions to fill IT job openings, including candidate sourcing, screening, interviewing, reference checking, and extending of job offers.: Sources and identifies qualified IT professionals through a high volume of outbound phone calls and meetings. Conducts phone screens and in person interviews to ensure qualifications meet requirements. Administers skills testing, reference checks, employee verifications, and background investigations as required. Utilizes resources to attract qualified professionals available for opportunities. Generates qualified leads and referrals for other qualified employees. Attends networking events and remains active in the IT community. Creates and places recruitment advertising in channels including the Internet, newspapers, employee communications, and professional publications. Builds and maintains professional relationships with workforce. Presents opportunities to qualified employees and negotiates contract terms. Collaborates with employing customers to evaluate candidates. Prepares employment agreements, extends job offers, arranges for any pre-employment activities such as drug screening, and completes and routes new-hire paperwork. Informs appropriate organizations of new employees. Maintains and distributes recruitment data. Conducts routine follow-up meetings with personnel on customer sites/projects. Performs research on market and pricing. Attends contract meetings and documents information from meetings. May conduct new-hire orientations as required. May attend career fairs as needed.

IT Webmaster

Controls all technical aspects of website, including performance issues, such as speed of access, and approving site content. May also have responsibilities for site design and creation. Plans, develops, tests, edits, maintains, documents and controls content, look, and flow of websites. Applies knowledge of programming techniques and computer internet systems. Typically requires a four-year degree in computer science or a related field; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Evaluates statistical study of traffic patterns (visitors). Analyzes and develops specifications, determines feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current system, and computer capabilities required for new or revised websites. Prepares flowcharts and diagrams to illustrate sequence of steps program must follow and to describe logical operations involved. Designs screen displays to accomplish goals of site. Provides specifications, using flowcharts and diagrams, into sequence of detailed instructions and logical steps for coding into language that can be processed by computer. Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to develop programs that meet client's site requirements. Enters commands into computer to run and test programs. Observes display screen to detect syntax or logic errors during program test, or uses diagnostic software to detect errors. Replaces, deletes, or modifies codes to correct errors. Analyzes, reviews, and alters program to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. Writes documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections. Writes manual to describe installation and operating procedures. Assists in solving operating problems with site.

IT Librarian

Performs tape/media library functions that includes, but is not limited to, mounting, refilling, unpacking, staging, labeling, and initializing tapes and classifying, cataloging, retrieving, loading, transferring, and maintaining library of data set contained on various types of media. Classifies media according to content, purpose, principal user, date generated, or other criteria. Assigns identification number, following standard system.: Prepares catalog of media classified. Stores tapes and other media according to classification and identification number. Issues tapes/other media and maintains charge-out records. Inspects returned tapes/other media and notifies supervisor when tapes/other media are worn or damaged. Removes obsolete tapes/other media from library, following data retention requirements. May print, separate, and distribute computer-generated output. May send tapes/other media to off-site location for secure storage. May maintain and update technical reference library. May maintain files of program developmental records and operating instructions. May work in computer room operations, performing tasks such as loading and removing paper and printouts and reels of tape.

IT Scientist

Designs computer information systems to provide management or clients with specific data. Designs and develops methods and procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information for input and retrieval to and from computer. Utilizes knowledge of electronic data processing principles, system and computer capabilities, mathematics, symbolic language, and optical or pattern recognition principles. : Develops alternate designs to resolve problems in input, storage, and retrieval of information. May specialize in specific field of information science, such as scientific or engineering research, or in specific discipline, such as business, medicine, education, aerospace, or library science.

IT Consultant

Consults with client or department heads to define need or problem, conducts research, performs studies and surveys to obtain data, and analyzes problems to advise on or recommend solutions, utilizing knowledge of theory, principles, or technology of specific discipline or field of specialization. Requires knowledge in fields defined as information technology, computer programming, computer security, computer systems analysis, database management, information systems, Internet applications and development, software development, and related fields. Requires a bachelor's degree. Excludes supervisory and paraprofessional positions.: Consults with client or department heads to ascertain and define need or problem area, and determine scope of investigation required to obtain solution. Conducts study or survey on need or problem to obtain data required for solution. Analyzes data to determine solutions, such as installation of alternate methods and procedures, changes in processing methods and practices, modification of machines or equipment, or redesign of products or services. Advises client or department heads on alternate methods of solving need or problem, or recommends specific solution. May negotiate contract for consulting service. May specialize in providing consulting service to government in field of specialization. May be designated according to field of specialization. IT Technician

Provides on-site technical, program, and general IT operations support. Evaluates effectiveness of existing information processing systems and develops new systems to improve production or workflow as required. Performs system and network troubleshooting. Helps all employees resolve computer related issues. Installs and configures software and hardware. Makes recommendations and performs upgrades for servers, workstations, phone systems, printers, and other devices. : Ensures that all backups are performed regularly. Ensures that all data is protected from internal and external threats. Troubleshoots software errors with suppliers as required to resolve issues. Designs and creates reports to provide data to different departments within the organization. Works with outside suppliers and consultants to develop systems to meet the organization's needs. Keeps library of all software, hardware, and supporting documentation. Assists managers in making new software selections. Performs network and system shutdowns. Makes recommendations for computer related training.
