Telecommunications Director

Directs telecommunications activities concerned with the planning, acquisition, design, installation, and maintenance of voice, data, and video equipment and systems for an organization. Directs studies to be conducted on existing communications system and equipment, such as present and projected volume of communications, effectiveness and adequacy of system, and estimated equipment replacement and maintenance costs. Oversees engineering studies to obtain data on new equipment and systems developments in communications field and adaptability of equipment to existing system. Typically reports to a Top Officer and supervises Telecommunications Manager.: Reviews and approves recommendations to determine whether equipment should be repaired or replaced, additional equipment installed, or newly developed equipment acquired considering such factors as predicted volume of communications traffic, acquisition and installation costs, estimated improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of operations, and changes in operational procedures resulting from new system installation. Approves acquisition and installation of new equipment. Directs preparation of equipment specifications and floor plans for installation in offices or departments. Interprets and implements company policies, and develops operating procedures to facilitate operations. Conducts management studies, collecting and interpreting economic and statistical data to prepare budget estimates, determine workload, personnel, and equipment requirements, and to forecast future needs. Audits department operations.

Telecommunications General Manager

Directs and coordinates overall operation and activities of telecommunications organization, and provides executive leadership to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations and maximize profits. Establishes strategic plans and guides implementation of those plans. Plans and develops organization policies and goals, and implements goals through subordinate administrative personnel. Coordinates activities of divisions or departments, such as operating, engineering, planning, sales, maintenance, or research and development, to effect operational efficiency and economy.: Directs and coordinates promotion of products or services performed to develop new markets, increase share of market, and obtain competitive position in industry. Assumes responsibility for the profitability of the organization. Analyzes division or department budget requests to identify areas in which reductions can be made, and allocates operating budget. Confers with administrative personnel and reviews activity, operating, and sales reports to determine changes in programs or operations required. Directs preparation of directives to division or department administrator(s) outlining policy, program, or operations changes to be implemented. Promotes organization in industry or trade associations. Represents the organization to major external authorities and constituencies. Selects and evaluates performance of executive staff for compliance with established policies and objectives and contributions in attaining objectives.

Telecommunications Engineer

Researches, develops, designs, and tests communications systems and equipment. Conducts studies on communications systems and equipment, such as present and projected volume of communications, effectiveness and adequacy of system, and estimated equipment costs. Performs engineering studies to obtain data on new equipment and systems developments in communications field and adaptability of equipment to existing system. A degree in engineering is required. Excludes supervisory and paraprofessional positions.: Analyzes reports, records, and recommendations to determine whether equipment should be repaired or replaced, additional equipment installed, or newly developed equipment acquired, considering such factors as predicted volume of communications traffic, acquisition and installation costs, estimated improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of operations, and changes in operational procedures resulting from new system installation. Prepares recommendations for acquisition of newly developed, additional, or replacement equipment based on analyses for action by management. Prepares equipment specifications and floor plans for installation in offices or departments. Contacts vendors to arrange for bids for lease or purchase of equipment. Approves acquisition and installation of equipment within limitations approved by management. Coordinates equipment installation and maintenance activities with operations to avoid disruptions in communications and ensure efficiency of operations.

Telecommunications Sales Representative

Sells telecommunications products or services in assigned area or territory. Communicates directly with new and existing customers or clients to evaluate their needs and to explain features and merits of telecommunications products or services offered.: Develops and qualifies new accounts. Develops and maintains strong client relationships. Works with Sales Engineer to build solutions for clients. Demonstrates telecommunications products or services, and provides assistance in the best application of products or services. Answers all questions concerning a product or service, with appropriate referrals where required. Closes transactions and takes orders. Investigates product/service warranty claims to ensure resolution within organization policies. Analyzes and interprets records of present and past sales, trends and costs, estimated and realized revenue, administrative commitments, and obligations incurred for management. May coordinate company telecommunications technical engineering support and services to ascertain customers' needs.

IT Telecommunications Technician

Responds to software and hardware problems, configures, implements, installs, repairs, and maintains data, voice, and network communications systems, using hand tools and software and hardware testing instruments and techniques. Implements recommended equipment modifications and enhancements in accordance with user request and business objectives. : Reviews work orders to move, change, install, upgrade, repair, or remove data communications equipment. Reads technical manuals to learn correct settings for equipment. Measures, cuts, and installs wires and cables. Splices wires or cables, using hand tools or soldering iron. Connects microcomputer or terminal to data communication lines, using hand tools and following diagrams and manuals. Disassembles equipment and inspects and tests wiring to locate and repair problem. Tests communication lines to ensure that specifications are met, using testing instruments such as voltmeter and data scope. Enters commands into computer to test equipment. Reads messages on computer screen to verify that data is being transmitted between locations according to specifications. Maintains working knowledge of current technologies, applications, and industry trends. May plan layout and installation of data communications equipment. May demonstrate use of equipment.

Telecommunications Specialist

Plans, develops, and implements telecommunication systems, such as voice and messaging systems, to provide communication capability among all locations of organization: Confers with customer to discuss communication needs and to identify telecommunication system requirements. Reviews and analyzes information, such as cost data, equipment listing, and office layout, to determine customer requirements, using computer. Develops system plan, based on analysis of requirements, feasibility, and cost, and reviews plan with customer. Prepares schedule and coordinates delivery and installation of telecommunication system, in consultation with customers and vendors. Oversees work of technicians involved in installation activities, such as installation of lines and hardware, to ensure conformance with specifications. Tests system to ensure system functions according to design specifications, using handtools and diagnostic equipment. Instructs customer in use of newly installed system. May troubleshoot system to locate and correct problems, such as line noise and access problems.
