Contract Packaging Engineer

Designs and develops innovative packaging, package upgrades, shipping and storage containers, material handling devices, and/or parts protection devices for use during manufacturing of new and existing products or direct line feed applications. Develops material handling and parts protection specifications, special packaging instructions, and coded packaging data.: Supports new package development and assists cross-functional business teams to launch new products, line extensions, and displays. Develops packages such as aerosols, bottles, pumps, cans, sprayers, sticks, tubes, films, etc.; shelf display packaging such as cartons, blisters, and blister cards; as well as flexible films, bottles, and closures. Manages assigned projects through planning, organizing, and coordinating and assures required deadlines are met. Coordinates development efforts with outside components suppliers as well as contract manufacturers, both domestically and internationally. Coordinates preparation of package prototypes for functional testing according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods. Provides engineering expertise in all facets of development of primary and secondary packaging, including laboratory and pilot scale ups. Communicates development timelines and testing results to business team members. Develops and prepares package material specifications, assembly instructions, and approves Bills of Material. Communicates technical issues and development details to the product team and to management. Drives and identifies gross margin improvement projects through the optimization of primary and secondary package design/re-design. Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis to support continuous improvement programs in the manufacturing processes through the design and redesign of packaging components. Understands basic supplier manufacturing processes including plastic molding, flexible materials, and secondary carton/corrugate. Manages and reports cost saving initiatives for packaging related projects.
