Environmental Scientist

Conducts research to identify and abate or eliminate sources of pollutants that affect people, wildlife, and their environments. Analyzes and reports measurements and observations of air, water, soil, and other sources to make recommendations on how best to clean and preserve the environment. Designs and monitors waste disposal sites, preserves water supplies, and reclaims contaminated land and water. Usual requirement is minimum of a bachelor's degree in the field of scientific and/or engineering disciplines. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Plans and conducts environmental research studies to develop methods or theories of abating or controlling sources of environmental pollutants, utilizing knowledge of principles and concepts of various scientific and engineering disciplines. Requires advanced study in the field of research in environmental sciences. Determines data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys. Plans and develops research models, using knowledge of mathematical, statistical, and physical science concepts and approaches. Identifies and analyzes sources of pollution to determine their effects. Collects and synthesizes data derived from pollution emission measurements, atmospheric monitoring, meteorological and mineralogical information, and soil or water samples. Prepares graphs, charts, and statistical models from synthesized data, using knowledge of mathematical, statistical, and engineering analysis techniques. Analyzes data to assess pollution problems, establishes standards, and develops approaches for control of pollution.

Environmental Director

Directs and oversees activities related to environmental control including staffing, scheduling, coordinating, and planning. Develops and maintains new and current programs and policies to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and local environmental and safety and health regulations and files required reports. Identifies all current and potential environmental risks and takes appropriate measures to eliminate or control them. Directs planning and establishing of department schedules and follows up performance against estimates. Typically reports to the Top Environmental Officer and supervises manager level employees.: Responsible for business development, quality improvement, human resources management, and recruiting and training of department staff. Recommends new policies or procedures as necessary. Oversees preparation and control of departmental annual budget. May represent company in dealings with governmental officials enforcing environmental and safety regulations.

Environmental Supervisor

Supervises and coordinates activities of employees engaged in environmental science and control, such as work needed to determine the level of pollutants in the air, water, and ground. Provides advice or assistance in ensuring compliance of Federal, State, and local regulations on environmental issues, which may include serving as liaison between the organization and regulatory agencies. Supervises activities related to staffing, scheduling, coordinating, and planning. Organizes and coordinates scientists and/or engineers. Typically reports to manager level in the organization and is a first line supervisor.: Recommends new policies or procedures as necessary. Assists in administration of personnel functions, including recruiting, review, and approval of job descriptions and salary classifications, and selection and placement of personnel. Plans and establishes schedules and follows up performance against estimates. May hire, train staff, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action.

Clinical Research Scientist

Plans, organizes, and conducts research assignments to increase scientific knowledge on medical-related topics. Formulates and conducts research on complex problems. Typically requires a doctorate degree in a health care related field with related clinical research experience.: Investigates subject area to define the scope of assigned project. Determines feasibility of projects in terms of staff, time, and resources to ensure that results effective results. Plans and performs quantitative and qualitative research procedures in various areas of biology, chemistry, physics, and other biomedical, dental, or related scientific areas. Plans and conducts experiments and analyzes the results of studies. Draws conclusions and makes recommendations that typically have a major impact on scientific research activities. Communicates findings through presentations at conferences and publication in specialist scientific and medical journals. Maintains detailed records of work. Remains informed of other research begin conducted related to field of study. Scientists who work within a university setting are typically involved in the teaching of students. May be concerned with gaining research funding to continue with work or to extend studies.

Computer Information Scientist

Designs computer information systems to provide management or clients with specific data. Designs and develops methods and procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information for input and retrieval to and from computer. Utilizes knowledge of electronic data processing principles, system and computer capabilities, mathematics, symbolic language, and optical or pattern recognition principles. : Develops alternate designs to resolve problems in input, storage, and retrieval of information. May specialize in specific field of information science, such as scientific or engineering research, or in specific discipline, such as business, medicine, education, aerospace, or library science.

Materials Scientist

Researches and studies the structures and chemical properties of materials to develop new products or enhance existing products. Conducts scientific studies for understanding, characterizing, and developing materials leading to potential uses for the benefit of science and emerging technologies. Usual requirement is a bachelor's degree in the field of material science, chemistry, physics or engineering. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Conducts programs for studying structures and properties of various materials, such as metals, alloys, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers to obtain research data. Plans experimental laboratory production of materials having special characteristics to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques for potential users. Prepares reports of materials studies for information of other scientists and requesters. May guide technical staff engaged in developing materials for specific use in projected product or device.

Political Scientist

Plans and conducts campaigns towards attaining an organization's goals. Studies proposed legislation to determine possible effect on an organization, alternatively, the interest of a client, who may be a person, specific group, or the general public. Usual requirement is a minimum of a bachelor's degree in field of specialty.: Studies phenomena of political behavior, such as origin, development, operation, and interrelationships of political institutions, to formulate and develop political understandings. Consults with government officials, civic bodies, research agencies, and political parties. Analyzes and interprets results of studies, and prepares reports detailing findings, recommendations, or conclusions. May monitor proposed legislation and regulations for possible impact and effect on client or organization. May conduct research into political philosophy and theories of political systems, utilizing information available on political phenomena, such as governmental institutions, public laws and administration, political party systems, and international law. May organize and conduct public opinion surveys and interpret results. May specialize in specific geographical, political, or philosophical aspect of political behavior.

Animal Scientist

Develops better, more efficient ways of producing and processing meat, poultry, eggs, and milk through the study of genetics, nutrition, reproduction, growth, and development of animals. Develops improved practices in feeding, housing, sanitation, and parasite and disease control. Positions covered by this definition are characterized by the inclusion of work that requires an understanding of both theories and principles. Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in field of specialty. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Conducts research in selection, breeding, feeding, management, and marketing of beef and dual-purpose cattle, horses, mules, sheep, dogs, goats, and pet animals. Controls breeding practices to improve strains of animals. May specialize in animal nutritional research. May be designated according to animal specialty.

Environmental Technician

Develops methods and devices used in the prevention, control, and correction of environmental hazards, working closely with environmental engineers and scientists. Uses principles and theories of science and engineering to solve technical problems. Work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of scientists and engineers. Companies prefer at least a two-year associate's degree in engineering technology with college courses in science, engineering, mathematics, and courses in field of specialty; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Inspects and maintains equipment affecting air pollution and recycling. Conducts tests and field investigations to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering, and scientific personnel in determining sources and methods of controlling pollutants in air, water, and soil, utilizing knowledge of agriculture, chemistry, meteorology, and principles of applied technologies. Performs quantitative and qualitative analyses according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances. Collects samples of gases from smokestacks, and collects other air samples and meteorological data to assist in evaluation of atmospheric pollutants. Collects water samples from streams and lakes, or raw, semi-processed or processed water, industrial waste water, or water from other sources to assess pollution problem. Collects soil, silt, or mud to determine chemical composition and nature of pollutants. Prepares sample for testing, records data, and prepares summaries and charts for review. Sets monitoring equipment to provide flow of information. Installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation. May inspect water and wastewater treatment systems to ensure pollution control requirements are met. May operate fixed or mobile monitoring or data collection station. May conduct bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity. May collect and analyze engine exhaust emissions to determine type and amount of pollutants. May specialize in one phase or type of environmental pollution or protection and be identified according to specialty.

Environmental Compliance Specialist

Provides technical leadership in the planning, development, organization, coordination, implementation, and review of environmental compliance program. Performs environmental compliance assessments, documents compliance status, and makes recommendations on corrective action required to achieve compliance. Develops plans and procedures necessary to achieve and maintain compliance.: Develops audit plans and audit and surveillance checklists. Prepares documentation on supporting environmental policies and programs. Develops and assists in providing technical support and training to employees and contractors. Performs internal management system auditing. Performs monitoring and coordinates facility corrective and preventive actions. Augments record keeping, reporting, and documentation practices to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Coordinates and performs environmental compliance activities, such as inspections, as appropriate. Leads team of personnel in the performance of audits, surveillances, and assessments. Prepares and presents audit and surveillance reports. Reports findings promptly to management. Provides input for program improvements. Verifies the achievement of quality and improving performance. Manages environmental compliance audit data and tracking.
