Special Vascular Imaging Technologist

Operates diagnostic imaging equipment to produce contrast enhanced radiographs of heart and cardiovascular system (angiocardiograms), during cardiac catheterization, to aid physician in diagnostic evaluation and treatment: positions and immobilizes patient on examining table, using head and shoulder braces and following specified protocols. Enters technical factors determined by protocol such as amount and quality of radiation beam, and specified filming sequence, into computer. Raises and lowers examining table and manipulates and positions x-ray tube in response to instructions from physician. Starts automatic injection of contrast medium into blood vessels of patient. Activates fluoroscope and 35 mm motion picture camera (cinefluorography) to produce images that assist physician in guiding catheter through cardiovascular system of patient. Observes gauges, recorder, and video screens of multichannel data analysis system that indicates blood pressure, cardiac output, and respiration, during imaging of cardiovascular system. Alerts physician to changes in patient responses. May assist physician in interventional procedures, such as instilling enzymes or inserting balloon in blood vessels to remove plaque or other blockage.

Vascular Technologist

Performs ultrasound examinations of the cerebral, peripheral, and abdominal vessels to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the vascular system (excluding the heart.): Using a wide range of instrumentation, non-invasively acquires and records information related to blood vessel anatomy and physiology. Prepares patient for tests and explains procedures to obtain cooperation and reassure patient. Obtains a pertinent clinical history through direct questioning and review of the patient's prior records. Performs a physical examination that usually involves observation of the patient, palpation of pulses, listening with a stethoscope, and in some cases, measurement of blood pressures at various locations. Performs hemodynamic evaluations to detect obstructions, as directed by a physician or in response to previous test results. Records, compiles, and maintains data for physician's review. Examines relevant anatomic segments and, depending upon the type of instrument and procedure being performed, records the data on videotape, video, radiograph film or strip chart paper. Presents data to the physician for review and interpretation. This position typically requires completion of a 2-4 year accredited ultrasound program and registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, with supplemental training in vascular technology.

Medical Radiologist Diagnostic

Diagnoses diseases of human body, using computer-assisted tomography, nuclear medicine, radiology, MRI, and ultra sound. Examines internal structures and functions of organ systems, making diagnoses after correlation of imaging/x-ray findings with other examinations and tests.: Administers radiopaque substances by injection, orally, or as enemas to render internal structures and organs visible on x-ray films or fluoroscopic screens. Evaluates quality and accuracy of imaging/x-rays.
