Design Drafter

Prepares detail drawings of unusual, complex, or original design, working with design originators. Designs may be prepared from verbal or written instructions. Performs unusually difficult assignments requiring considerable initiative, resourcefulness, and drafting expertise. : Ensures that anticipated problems in manufacture, assembly, installation, and operation are resolved by the drawings produced. Exercises independent judgment in selecting and interpreting data based on a knowledge of the design intent. Although working primarily as drafter/designer, may occasionally interpret general designs prepared by others to complete details. May provide advice and guidance to or supervise lower level drafters. May serve as a coordinator and planner for large and complex drafting projects.

Drafter Aeronautical

Prepares engineering drawings detailing plans and specifications used for the manufacture of aircraft, missiles, and related aeronautical things. Drafts engineering drawings of developmental or production airplanes, missiles, and component and ancillary equipment, including launch mechanisms and scale models of prototype aircraft, as planned by aeronautical engineer.: Prepares working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches and notes for engineering or manufacturing purposes according to dimensional specifications. Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, relationship of one part to another, and relationship of various parts to entire structure or project, utilizing knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, manufacturing technology, and related physical sciences. Creates preliminary or final sketch of proposed drawing, using standard drafting techniques and devices, such as drawing board, T-square, protractor, and drafting machine, or using computer-assisted design drafting equipment. Modifies drawings as directed by engineer.

Aeronautical Drafter

Prepares working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches and notes for engineering or production purposes according to dimensional specifications.: Examines electronic schematics and supporting documents received from design engineering to develop, compute, and verify specifications drafting data. Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, relationship of one part to another, and relationship of various parts to entire structure or project, utilizing knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, materials, production technology, and related physical sciences. Creates preliminary or final sketch of proposed drawing, using drafting techniques and devices, or using computer-assisted design drafting equipment. Modifies drawings as directed by engineer. May use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment and software.

Structural Assembler

Lays out reference points, fabricates, and assembles structures according to blueprints and engineering specifications, using hand tools and portable power tools. : Confers with liaison personnel to determine assembly priorities. Reads blueprints and engineering specifications to plan assembly of structures. Scribes cutting and bending lines on prefabricated metal parts using precision measuring and layout instruments. Cuts, bends, and trims parts according to layout, using hand tools and portable power tools, such as brakes, electric saws, and grinders. Fits and assembles component structural parts preparatory to final assembly and welding using hand tools. Reworks assembled structures according to engineering specification changes. Verifies symmetry of structures, using surveyor's instruments.

Requires postsecondary school training in drafting along with well-developed drafting and mechanical drawing skills; a knowledge of drafting standards, mathematics, science, and engineering technology; and a solid background in computer-aided drafting and design techniques. After gaining experience, drafters progress to more difficult work with less supervision.: Reviews rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data received from Civil Engineer. Plots maps and charts showing profiles and cross-sections, indicating relation of topographical contours and elevations to buildings, retaining walls, tunnels, overhead power lines, and other structures. Drafts detailed drawings of structures and installations, such as roads, culverts, fresh water supply, sewage disposal systems, dikes, wharves, and breakwaters. Computes volume of tonnage of excavations and fills and prepares graphs and hauling diagrams used in earthmoving operations. May accompany survey crew in field to locate grading markers or to collect data required for revision of construction drawings. May specialize in drafting and modifying topographical maps from surveying notes and aerial photographs. May use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment and software.
