Design Drafter Product

Prepare detailed drawings of architectural and structural features of buildings or drawings and topographical relief maps used in civil engineering projects, such as highways, bridges, and public works. Utilize knowledge of building materials, engineering practices, and mathematics to complete drawings.

Design Drafter CAD/CAM

Drafts designs utilizing computer-aided drafting systems to prepare drawings and designs. Confers with engineers and other subject matter experts to interpret design concepts, determine nature and type of required detailed working drawings, and coordinate work with others. Requires two years of postsecondary training in drafting, as well as having well-developed drafting and mechanical drawing skills, and knowledge of computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment and software.: Drafts design drawings. Utilizes specialized software to retrieve information from computer files and to display information on screen. Uses software to zoom in, redesign, modify or edit drawing, and to transfer drawing from computer to hard copy. Completes product or project designs. Analyzes data. Interacts with software providers. Verifies accuracy and completeness of drawings. May compile data, compute quantities, determine materials needed, and prepare cost estimates.

Drafter Aeronautical

Prepares engineering drawings detailing plans and specifications used for the manufacture of aircraft, missiles, and related aeronautical things. Drafts engineering drawings of developmental or production airplanes, missiles, and component and ancillary equipment, including launch mechanisms and scale models of prototype aircraft, as planned by aeronautical engineer.: Prepares working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches and notes for engineering or manufacturing purposes according to dimensional specifications. Calculates and lays out dimensions, angles, curvature of parts, materials to be used, relationship of one part to another, and relationship of various parts to entire structure or project, utilizing knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, manufacturing technology, and related physical sciences. Creates preliminary or final sketch of proposed drawing, using standard drafting techniques and devices, such as drawing board, T-square, protractor, and drafting machine, or using computer-assisted design drafting equipment. Modifies drawings as directed by engineer.

Drafter Electronics

Drafts detailed drawings, such as wiring diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical detail drawings, and drawings of intermediate and final assemblies, used in manufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of electronic components, printed circuit boards, and equipment. Requires postsecondary school training in drafting along with well-developed drafting and mechanical drawing skills; a knowledge of drafting standards, mathematics, science, and engineering technology; and a solid background in computer-aided drafting and design techniques. After gaining experience, drafters progress to more difficult work with less supervision.: Reviews rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data received from Civil Engineer. Plots maps and charts showing profiles and cross-sections, indicating relation of topographical contours and elevations to buildings, retaining walls, tunnels, overhead power lines, and other structures. Drafts detailed drawings of structures and installations, such as roads, culverts, fresh water supply, sewage disposal systems, dikes, wharves, and breakwaters. Computes volume of tonnage of excavations and fills and prepares graphs and hauling diagrams used in earthmoving operations. May accompany survey crew in field to locate grading markers or to collect data required for revision of construction drawings. May specialize in drafting and modifying topographical maps from surveying notes and aerial photographs. May use computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment and software.

Uses principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems. Work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of engineers. Companies prefer two years of college courses in science, engineering, and mathematics, plus courses in field of specialty along with field experience; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Studies work order request to determine type of service, such as lighting or power, demanded by installation. Visits site of proposed installation and draws rough sketch of location. Takes measurements, such as street dimensions, distances to be spanned by wire and cable, or space available, in existing buildings and underground vaults that affect installation and arrangement of equipment. Estimates materials, equipment, and incidentals needed for installation. Draws master sketch showing relation of proposed installation to existing facilities. Makes other drawings, such as those pertaining to wiring connections or cross sections of underground cables, as required for instructions to installation crew. Consults power distribution engineer on difficulties encountered. May draft sketches to scale. May estimate labor and material costs, using price lists and records on previous projects. May inspect completed installation of electrical equipment and related building circuitry to verify conformance with specifications. May prepare specifications and diagrams for installation of gas distribution pipes owned by gas-electric utility.
