Computer Systems Engineer

Analyzes organizational business needs in terms of information technology systems requirements. Plans information technology systems that will provide system capabilities required for projected workloads, and plans layout and installation of new system or modification of existing system. Analyzes information to determine, recommend, and plan layout for type of computers and peripheral equipment, or modifications to existing equipment and system, that will provide capability for proposed project or work load, efficient operation, and effective use of allotted space. May enter data into computer terminal to store, retrieve, and manipulate data for analysis of system capabilities and requirements. May specify power supply requirements and configuration. May recommend purchase of equipment to control dust, temperature, and humidity in area of system installation. May specialize in one area of system application or in one type or make of equipment. May train users to use new or modified equipment. May monitor functioning of equipment to ensure system operates in conformance with specifications. May represent consulting firm or equipment manufacturer.

Computer Hardware Engineer

Researches, designs, develops, and tests computer hardware such as computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, keyboards, modems, printers, and other related equipment. Works closely with software engineers and other scientists in design and testing of computer hardware, circuits, and related components. Requires a bachelor's degree in computer hardware engineering. Excludes paraprofessional positions.: Researches, develops, designs, and tests computers and related electrical components, equipment, and systems, applying principles and techniques of electrical engineering. Works closely with software engineers and other scientists in design and testing of computer hardware, circuits, and related components. May supervise technicians, drafters, or lower level engineering personnel. May direct activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements. May direct and coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems in field installations. May use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

Computer Peripheral Equipment Operator

Operates computer hardware system peripheral equipment to transfer data to and from computer and to convert data from one format to another. Enters commands and activates controls on computer and peripheral equipment to integrate and operate equipment. Monitors the system for equipment failure or errors in performance. Notifies supervisor or computer maintenance technicians of equipment malfunctions.: Responds to program error messages by finding and correcting problems or terminating the program. Reads job set-up instructions to determine equipment to be used, order of use, material such as disks and paper to be loaded, and control settings. Operates spreadsheet program and other types of software to load and manipulate data and to produce reports. Retrieves, separates, and sorts program output as needed, and sends data to specified users. Loads peripheral equipment with selected materials for operating runs. Answers telephone calls to assist computer users encountering problems. May be designated as lead and oversee loading of peripheral equipment by peripheral equipment operators. May oversee the operation of computer hardware systems, including coordinating and scheduling the use of computer terminals and networks to ensure efficient use.

Systems Engineer Computer

Research, design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software for medical, industrial, military, communications, aerospace, business, scientific, and general computing applications. Set operational specifications and formulate and analyze software requirements. Apply principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis.

Computer Systems Manager

Manages and coordinates computer operations activity to ensure rapid, accurate, and efficient data processing of organization's workload. Plans and develops policies and procedures for carrying out computer operations. Builds systems capability that reflects the highest state of technical sophistication consistent with the corporation's needs and budget. Ensures security of company's database. Typically reports to a director and may have supervisors reporting to this position.: Meets with subordinates to discuss progress of work, resolve problems, and ensure that standards for quality and quantity of work are met. Creates staff capable of meeting current and future needs, and adjusts hours of work, priorities, and staff assignments to ensure efficient operation, based on workload. Reviews daily logs and reports to detect recurring slowdowns or errors. Consults with software and hardware vendors to solve computer processing problems. Meets with users to determine quality of service and identify needs. Ensures organization makes maximum use of the general system by providing for the education and training of the principal users. Meets with data processing managers to determine impact of proposed changes in hardware or software on computer operations and service to users. Evaluates new software and hardware to determine usefulness and compatibility with existing software and hardware. Evaluates proposed data processing projects to assess adequacy of existing hardware, and recommends purchase of equipment. Develops budget and monitors expenditures. May direct and coordinate activities of tape library.
