Responsible for the development, management, and operations of multiple products, service lines, or specialty units in a hospital or health care system.: Organizes and directs operations of multiple service lines in a hospital or health care system. Develops and implements business and marketing plans for service lines. Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates outcomes of the department’s strategic plans. Develops strategic initiatives and transforms initiatives into action plans. Performs regular data analysis of service line performance and medical cost reports to identify variances and root causes so that areas of focus may be identified and resources may be appropriately deployed. Manages and oversees activities of underwriters in reviewing applications for insurance to evaluate degree of risk involved. Underwrites, approves, or rejects loans. Declines risks that are too excessive to obligate company in accordance with company's underwriting policies. The manager level is typically the second level of management and may have first level supervisors reporting to this position; however, in smaller companies the manager may be a first level supervisor over subordinate staff.: Hires and trains underwriters. Analyzes and resolves underwriting problems, or assists employees in solving work problems. Confers with company officials to plan and develop methods and procedures to increase sales, lower costs, and obtain greater efficiency. Interprets, implements, and enforces company policies. Prepares and submits activity reports.

Personal Lines Underwriter

Reviews individual applications for insurance to evaluate degree of risk involved and accepts applications, following company's underwriting policies. Examines such documents as application form, inspection report, insurance maps, and medical reports to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant's financial standing, age, occupation, accident experience, and value and condition of real property. : Reviews company records to ascertain amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks, and evaluates possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance. Declines risks that are too excessive to obligate company. Dictates correspondence for field representatives, medical personnel, and other insurance or inspection companies to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company's underwriting policies. When risk is excessive, authorizes reinsurance, or when risk is substandard, limits company's obligation by decreasing value of policy, specifying applicable endorsements, or applying rating to ensure safe and profitable distribution of risks, using rate books, tables, code books, and other reference material. Typically workers who underwrite one type of insurance do not underwrite others and are designated according to type of insurance underwritten.

Insurance Underwriting Clerk

Compiles data and performs routine clerical tasks to relieve insurance underwriter of minor administrative detail, using knowledge of underwriting and policy issuing procedures.: Reviews correspondence, records, and reports to select routine matters for processing. Routes risk-involved matters to insurance underwriter for evaluation. Prepares requisitions for and reviews credit and motor vehicle reports and results of investigations to compile and summarize pertinent data onto underwriting worksheets. Consults manuals or software database programs to determine rate classifications and assigns rates to pending applications. Corresponds with or telephones field personnel to inform them of underwriting actions taken. Maintains related files.

Travels to and inspects travel accommodations and tourist facilities, such as hotels, motels, restaurants, campgrounds, vacation resorts, and other similar year-round or seasonal recreational establishments in order to observe conditions and gather data to be used in determining ratings. : Rates or re-rates establishment according to predetermined standards concerning quantity and quality of such factors as convenience of location, variety of facilities available, degree of cleanliness maintained, efficiency of services offered, range of rates charged, and other matters of concern to travelers. Reports findings to employer by filling out forms containing ratings and reasons for conclusions and judgments. May sell to establishments concerned advertising space in publications (such as dining guide, tourist magazine, or recreational-area catalogs) in which ratings are to appear.
