Construction Laborer

Performs a variety of duties on construction projects, transferring from one task to another as directed.: Measures distances from grade stakes, drives stakes, and stretches tight line. Bolts, nails, aligns, and blocks up under forms. Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications. Levels earth to fine grade specifications, using pick and shovel. Mixes concrete, using portable mixer. Smoothes and finishes freshly poured cement or concrete, using float, trowel, or screed. Positions, joins, aligns, and seals pipe sections. Erects scaffolding, shoring, and braces. Mops, brushes, or spreads paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection. Applies caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal crevices. Grinds, sands, or polishes surfaces, such as concrete, marble, terrazzo, or wood flooring, using abrasive tools or machines. Performs variety of tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools, such as demolishing buildings, sawing lumber, dismantling forms, removing projections from concrete, mounting pipe hangers, and cutting and attaching insulating material.

Railroad Construction Manager

Plans and coordinates activities of workers engaged in constructing, installing, inspecting, and maintaining railroad track and right-of-ways within assigned district of railroad. Plans work assignments and schedules. Requisitions supplies and materials to complete construction projects. Typically reports to a director and may have supervisors reporting to this position.: Dispatches workers and equipment to scenes of accidents and impassable roadbeds or tunnels to repair damage and restore service. Investigates accidents, defective tracks, and obstructions to right-of-ways and issues restorative work orders. Prepares reports stating causes of accidents or concerning condition of tracks, and issues recommendations to prevent future accidents, damage, or track deterioration. Recommends construction of new tracks.

Construction Engineer

Leads the development of construction engineering projects. Supports the construction engineering projects throughout the organization. Performs tasks including client/project development, resource management, and supervision management of construction administration activities including construction inspection, testing, and contract administration.: Collaborates on construction projects throughout the organization as part of construction engineering teams consisting of surveyors, inspectors, material tester, and support personnel. Designs protocols for the necessary work and peer review for quality control purposes. Works with necessary agencies for acquiring needed permits and approvals. Assists in the development of corporate design standards. Assists in managing and coordinating preliminary sites or building analysis for construction projects. Applies advanced construction engineering techniques and plans, organizes, and supervises the construction management work of construction projects. Manages the General Contractor, subcontractor, Architect, testing agency, and other project participants in the successful execution of design, schedule, cost, and quality aspects of construction projects. Uses CAD and other personal computer software packages typically associated with construction projects. Communicates with upper management and customers to ensure timely coordination and proper status of assigned construction projects. Works with the Construction Engineering Director and Manager to identify resources needed to address project issues and to interface with program and/or planning personnel in transitioning management responsibility for projects that are leaving the design phase and entering the construction phase. Exercises technical expertise in the construction engineering field and monitors project activities related to site work. Employs exceptional construction engineering knowledge with possible specialization in mechanical and electrical equipment and instrumentation.

Assistant Construction Superintendent

Assists superiors in planning construction procedures, specifications, work schedules, and material needs and/or supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in field construction projects, such as buildings, dams, highways, pipelines, or other construction projects. This is typically a second level supervisory position with responsibility over first level supervisors or a first level supervisor with multi-craft responsibility; typically requires previous experience as a foreman over craft workers and as a first level supervisor over craft foreman.: Inspects work performed by subcontractors, including ductwork, wiring, and pipe installations, to ensure conformance with specifications. Examines blueprints, selects materials, and inspects them to ensure conformance with provisions of building code, local ordinance, and specifications. Responsible for assigned segment of project. Inspects work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and adherence to work schedules.

Construction Superintendent

Directs activities of workers concerned with construction of buildings, dams, highways, pipelines, or other construction projects. Studies specifications to plan procedures for construction on basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction, based on knowledge of available tools and equipment and various building methods. Assembles members of organization (supervisory, clerical, engineering, and other workers) at start of project. Typically supervisory personnel and subcontractors report to this position.: Orders procurement of tools and materials to be delivered at specified times to conform to work schedules. Confers with and directs supervisory personnel and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays. Confers with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to resolve complaints and grievances within workforce. Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel, as well as inspectors and suppliers of tools and materials, to resolve construction problems and improve construction methods. Inspects work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and that construction schedules are adhered to. Prepares, or receives from subordinates, reports on progress, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports. May direct workers concerned with major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations. May be designated according to type of project, work, or construction activity directed.

Construction Engineering Supervisor

Supervises, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering project within area of assigned responsibility. Plans and formulates engineering program and organizes project staff according to project requirements. Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of the project, such as technical studies, design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and testing, in accordance with engineering disciplines of staff. Typically reports to manager level in the organization and is a first line supervisory position.: Reviews plans for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications. Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems. Directs integration of technical activities and products. Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases. Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget. Prepares interim and completion project reports.

Construction Equipment Operator

Operates construction equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools. : Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects. Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools. Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges. Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions. Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. Welds broken parts and structural members.

Construction Worker

Performs a variety of tasks, such as erecting, repairing, and wrecking buildings and bridges; installing waterworks, locks, and dams; grading and maintaining railroad right-of-ways and laying ties and rails; and widening, deepening, and improving rivers, canals, and harbors, requiring little or no independent judgment.: Digs, spreads, and levels dirt and gravel, using pick and shovel. Lifts, carries, and holds building materials, tools, and supplies. Cleans tools, equipment, materials, and work areas. Mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials, using hand tools. Joins, wraps, and seals sections of pipe. Performs variety of routine, non-machine tasks, such as removing forms from set concrete, filling expansion joints with asphalt, placing culvert sections in trench, assembling sections of dredge pipeline, removing wallpaper, and laying railroad track. Many of these jobs are not full time; project size and organization of work determine whether workers spend their time on one job or transfer from task to task as project progresses to completion. Some workers habitually work in one branch of industry, whereas others transfer according to availability of work or on seasonal basis. Work is usually performed with other workers.

Construction Foreman

Coordinates and oversees activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures. Examines blueprints to determine dimensions of structure. Lays out floor plan and cabinetwork, using rule, framing square, and calipers. Selects materials and structural units and inspects them to ensure conformance with provisions of building code and local ordinance. Determines sequence of activities concerned with fabrication, assembly, and erection of structure. Assigns workers to such tasks as cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, and laying flooring. This is typically a first level supervisory position and requires previous experience as a craft worker.: Inspects work performed by subcontractors, including ductwork, wiring, and pipe installations, to ensure conformance with specifications. Installs doors, builds stairs, and lays hardwood floors.
