Machinist Marine Engineering

Installs and repairs gasoline and diesel engines in boats, such as yachts, tugs, and trawlers, following specifications: positions engine over mounting holes, using chain hoist. Bolts engine to mount and straps fuel tank to cradle, using handtools. Connects fuel, oil, and waterlines to engine. Installs engine controls, propeller shaft, and propeller. Attaches test instruments, such as tachometer and voltmeter to engine. Starts engine and records operating data, such as revolutions per minute, and voltage output. Disassembles defective engines and repairs or replaces damaged parts, using handtools.

CNC Lathe Operator

Lays out work, sets up, and operates computer numeric control (CNC) lathes to perform machining operations according to required tolerances and specifications. Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters. Interprets geometric dimensions and tolerances. Monitors initial runs and does inspection to assure conformance to blueprints and quality plans.: Programs and sets up lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; and proving part programs. Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position. Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces, adhering to international standards. Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; and adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes. Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; and calling for repairs. Documents actions by completing production and quality logs. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.
