Sales reps are responsible for selling the products and services of a company. In directly working with clients, you could say that they are on the “front lines” of commerce. Sales reps can work in stores, on phones, or meet with clients in a variety of situations. Although most sales reps earn a fixed salary, a large percentage also works on commission. The benefit to this arrangement is it gives them a chance to use their sales skills to earn much more than they would with a fixed salary.
Working on commission does have its serious setbacks though because earnings are largely tied to making successful sales. If sales reps don’t make sales, they don’t really get paid so this type of job works best with highly enthusiastic, proactive individuals. Of course, they also need to really know how to sell. The best sales reps are those people who know the art of selling so well that they can sell any product or service.
In addition to knowing how to make sales, many people become sales reps in sectors that can be related to their college degree or prior experiences. For example, people with engineering degrees may become sales reps for construction firms while former Air Force technicians may become sales reps for aeronautical companies.
The average sales rep makes an average annual salary of $54,645 in the US. Learn more about how much you can earn with other sales-related jobs by using the annual income calculator at CBsalary.
