Karmanos Cancer Center Institute

Overview

Based in midtown Detroit, Karmanos is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. Caring for more than 6,000 new patients annually on a budget of $265 million, conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Center is among the nation’s best cancer centers. Through the commitment of 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported by thousands of volunteer and financial donors, Karmanos strives to prevent, detect and eradicate cancer.

Culture

The Institute is committed to helping provide leading care throughout our community and the state of Michigan. We are joining with more and more physicians and hospitals -- both within and outside the state -- though an affiliate program to benefit patients by:

  • Providing Institute expertise close to home;
  • Working with community physicians and their patients through the diagnosis and treatment process;
  • Offering the latest therapies to patients, near their homes, through participation in clinical research studies; and
  • Providing a seamless transition to the Institute for patients who require diagnostics and treatments not readily available in the community.
Cancer Treatment

Treatment for cancer depends on the type of cancer; the size, location, and stage of the disease; the person's general health; and other factors. The doctor develops a treatment plan to fit each person's situation.

People with cancer are often treated by a team of specialists, which may include a surgeon, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist, and others. Most cancers are treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or biological therapy. The doctors may decide to use one treatment method or a combination of methods.

Clinical trials (research studies) offer important treatment options for many people with cancer. Research studies evaluate promising new therapies and answer scientific questions. The goal of such trials is to find treatments that are more effective in controlling cancer with fewer side effects.

Patients often benefit from receiving second opinions with other physicians and experts.
