Workers.com matches blue collar workers with great jobs through its new Sacramento branch office

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A 12-year-old Bay Area staffing firm that matches workers to great temporary and temp-to-hire blue-collar jobs through its award-winning Web site, www.Workers.com, has opened a new Sacramento area office.

Industrial Services Company has been helping blue-collar workers and skilled tradespeople connect with employers in Northern California through temporary staffing and temp-to-hire contracts since 1989. ISC is headquartered in Concord and operates a branch office in Union City.

The new Sacramento office is at 9845 Horn Road, Suite 180, in the Old Mills Winery Business Park, at Folsom and Bradshaw in Rancho Cordova. The office began local operations on Nov. 1.

Doug Rountree is the manager of the new branch. Rountree was previously ISC's personnel manager. Rountree is certified as a hazardous waste technician with prior experience as a safety supervisor and a petrochemical leadman, and was an operations specialist in the U.S. Navy.

"Having an office in Sacramento will enable us to broaden our scope and better serve clients in the area," Rountree said. ISC has a number of clients, like Ryder Logistics, that are already based in Sacramento. Others, like Old Castle Utility Vault, and Philips Environmental, are in the process of expanding into the Sacramento area themselves. Still others are based in locations in the region between the capital and the Bay Area, like Tri-Valley Growers in Modesto, or Simonton Windows in Vacaville.

All of these companies have already been using ISC to meet their labor needs, and will expand those contracts to handle even more work out of the Sacramento branch. "We've been doing a good job for them already," Rountree said, "and it's going to get that much better with this move."

ISC's Web site, www.Workers.com, was recently given a national award of excellence by the American Staffing Association, judged among 160 staffing Web sites nationwide. Workers who visit Workers.com can fill out a short pre-registration form online and add a resume if they want. ISC personnel professionals then contact them to arrange a live personal interview before making placement recommendations.

ISC provides workers to more than 500 industrial clients in construction, warehousing, manufacturing, and production positions and all classes of drivers. Skilled trades workers, such as trained hazardous waste specialists, welders and steamfitters, are especially in demand.

Industrial workers like the flexibility and variety that temporary assignments offer them, said ISC President Jim Stielow. It's a great way to try out a number of jobs to see what feels best without the stigma that often can be attached to frequent job changes. "Many people just like regular change in their lives," Stielow said. "This way they can get it without any penalty - it becomes a positive value both for the worker and the employer. Others may be looking for something better, and when they find it, they're prepared to stay."

Working on temporary assignments through ISC at a number of jobsites over a relatively short period of time, workers can gain a valuable range of experience and exposure to a variety of employers and types of projects, enhancing their value to prospective new employers in the process. As they finish one assignment, workers are typically offered an assortment of new opportunities to choose from.

With the unemployment rate plunging below 4 percent these days, there is no shortage of options. Because they remain employed by ISC throughout, workers get the benefits that new opportunities can bring, while avoiding the hassles of hunting for a new job, going to tedious personal interviews, filling out applications and tax forms and interrupting their payroll routines.

More and more, employers are using temporary workers to manage bursts of work for special projects, vacations, illness, medical leaves and business peaks or simply because they are unable to quickly find qualified applicants to fill immediate needs.

When an employer and a worker find a match that works for both of them, after a pre-determined number of hours on the job, the ISC worker may transfer to the employers' payroll with no conversion fee or balloon payment for the employer.

"Whether they stay with the same job or keep moving from one assignment to the next, everybody gets what they want," Stielow said.
