About Us

An Academic Medical Center is not like an ordinary hospital. At UMMC, Mississippi’s only Academic Medical Center, we ask our caregivers to offer the highest level of care to every patient, every day. We ask our nationally recognized physicians to push the boundaries of what is possible. We strive to create an environment where patients can expect more.

Our employees and physicians share a commitment to lead the way in medical innovation and quality of care. We employ more than 8,500 individuals who are dedicated to improving lives through our three missions: quality care, cutting-edge research, and the education of tomorrow’s health care leaders.

University of Mississippi Health Care (UMHC) represents the patient care mission of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. UMHC is comprised of five hospitals along with University Physicians – Mississippi’s largest multispecialty medical practice.

The hospitals of UMHC serve more than 34,000 inpatients annually. Outpatient and emergency room visits total more than 455,000 each year. We provide AirCare helicopter medical transport services between Mississippi hospitals and UMHC hospitals, giving residents across the state access to the highest levels of care in the emergency or life-threatening situations.

Hospital services are supported by hundreds of physician specialists who provide a spectrum of specialty care, unsurpassed in Mississippi. This physician network, in tandem with expert professional caregivers, provides a level of healthcare that our employees choose for their personal care and for the care of their families. In essence, this gives UMHC employees confidence in the care they receive and give.

Nursing

Some careers require an astute mind. Others demand emotional commitment. But very few require the delicate balance of both that it takes to excel as a nurse.

On one hand, you're expected to keep abreast of some of the world's most advanced technology and work with some of the most highly trained professionals in the country. At the same time, you have the ability to touch the lives of others in a profound and meaningful way, during their time of greatest need.

At University Mississippi Health Care, we understand the passion that drives people to become nurses. As an affiliate of one of the region's most respected universities, we share your respect for knowledge. Likewise, as one of the South's most respected health care institutions, the desire to care and heal is at the core of everything we do.

You have an urge within you not just to learn and grow, but also to make a difference in the lives of others. We call it a passion for nursing. It's a feeling you'll find mirrored by all those around you at UMHC.
